Professor Michal Kokowski [Lecturer International Summer School, Poland]


Michal Kokowski isgraduated in three fields: Fundamental Problems of Technology (AGH, University of Science and Technology, Cracow, 1986), Physics (Jagiellonian University, Cracow, 1987) and Philosophy (Pontifical Academy of Theology, Cracow, 1994). His Professor Doctor Habilitatus ("profesor nadzwyczajny doktor habilitowany" in Polish terminology) Michal Kokowski works in the Department for the History of Exact and Natural Sciences and Technology in the Institute for the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Kokowski is Member of the Commission of the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (he serves as Secretary of this Commission), Member of the Commission of Philosophy of Natural Sciences of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (he serves as Secretary of this Commission), Member of Copernicus Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (he is Manager of the "Copernican group" of this Center) and Member of the European Society for the History of Science (he serves as a Member of the Scientific Board of this Society). He published, among others, in Physical Review B, Solid State Physics, Theoria et Historia Scientiarum, Zagadnienia Filozoficzne w Nauce and Kwartalnik Historia Nauki i Techniki.

His general scientific interests are focused on different aspects of history and philosophy of the exact sciences like detailed mathematical considerations, methodology, philosophy of scientific discovery, as well as the relationships of the exact sciences with humanistic culture (philosophy, theology and arts) and technology. In particular, he researched the question of Wladyslaw Natanson and Thomas S. Kuhn's thoughts, and especially the genesis, essence and reception of Copernicus's achievements.
